rules:

  • The duathlon consists of a 1K run, a 10K bike, and a 3K run.

  • Only Tangerine Bikeshare is allowed for the race. Make sure you have an account to unlock the bike. A pay-as-you-go option is avaialable on their app. No membership is required.

  • Be mindful of pedestrians and other members of the community since we are racing on public grounds.

  • Bike helmets are not mandatory, but highly encouraged.

  • Transition rules must be followed, or a time penalty may be applied to your final time. (Details in 'How to race a duathlon')

  • Race bibs must be visible from the front at all times.

  • Have fun!

 

race day instructions:

  • The next race is on Sunday August 17th.

  • To reach the start line, you must take the ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal to Hanlan's Point on Toronto Island. Please arrive with adequate time to collect your bib, sign our safety waiver and warm up. The ferry schedule can be found here.

  • When you arrive on the island, find @andygoesthedistance to sign the safety waiver form. You will be given your bib and pins after signing the waiver.

  • The race will start in waves to help with bikeshare and dock availability. You do not have to stay with your wave during the race. Find out which wave you're in here.

    • Wave 1 starts at 6:30pm​

    • Wave 2 starts at 6:35pm

    • Wave 3 starts at 7:00pm

    • Wave 4 starts at 7:05pm

 

​how to race a duathlon:

  • TLDR: run, bike, run

  • The race starts with a 1K run. You’ll run 500 meters in one direction, then turn around at a flag and run back the same way.

  • After the run, go to the grassy area (called the transition zone) to undock your bike and start the bike ride.

  • The transition zone is also where you can find water.

  • You can only get on your bike after you leave the transition zone. If you get on too early, you’ll recieve a time penalty.

  • The bike ride is 10K around Toronto Island. The route is easy to follow with very few turns, and signs will tell you where to go. If you’re not sure about the route, bring a phone or bike computer to help you navigate. The bike route can be found here on PlotARoute.

  • When you finish the bike ride, you must get off your bike (both feet on the ground) before entering the grassy area. If not, you will receive a time penalty.

  • Once you’re back in the transition zone, dock your bike. Wait a few seconds to make sure it’s fully docked so you don’t get charged extra by Bikeshare.

  • There will be large bins in the transition zone where you can drop off your gear (helmet, gloves, phone, water bottle, etc.).

  • The final run is 3K. Run 1.5K in one direction, turn around at the flag, and run back the same way.

  • When you see the finish line, smile! There will be a camera waiting for you!

  • Contingency: If bikes or docks are unavailable, the timer will record the time between entering the transition zone and successfully docking or picking up your bike. This time will be subtracted from your final race time.

Q: Are there any registration fees?

A: There are no registration fees! You would only need to pay for the ferry rides and the bikeshare.

Q: Where is the start line and bib pickup?

A: The start line and bib pickup are located on Hanlan's Point. Once you exit the ferry, you will see the bikeshare docks and our start line on your right-hand side.

Q: Do I need to bring my own bike?
A: No, only Tangerine Bikeshare can be used in this race.

Q: Do I need to download the bikeshare app ahead of time?

A: Yes, please download the bikeshare app and make an account before the race!

Q: Do I need to buy a bikeshare membership?

A: No, bikeshare allows a pay-as-you-go option, available on the homepage of the app by tapping the ‘Scan’ button. Just make sure to include your payment info in the app.
Q: Is there a cut-off time?
A: No official cut-off, but please complete the race before sunset (approximately 1.5 hours after starting).
Q: Can beginners participate?
A: Absolutely! Our race hosts a wide range of athletes! Athletes are grouped into waves based on their projected finish times to ensure they race alongside others of similar pace.
